Cmdr. Tyler R. Scharar

Commander Scharar is a native of Houston, Texas. He graduated with distinction and received a commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture. He graduated from Stanford University in 2015 with a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He assumed command of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) ONE THREE THREE in June 2025.
Commander Scharar’s previous operational tours as a Surface Warfare Officer include service with USS GARY (FFG-51), Yokosuka, Japan (2005-2008) as Combat Systems Division Officer; and Riverine Squadron ONE, Little Creek, VA (2008-2009) as Assistant Officer-in-Charge deploying for Operation Iraqi Freedom to Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
Following lateral transfer into the Civil Engineer Corps, he served with NMCB ELEVEN, Gulfport, MS (2009-2011) as Assistant Operations Officer for Field Training and Officer-in-Charge deploying for Operation Enduring Freedom to Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines; NMCB THREE, Port Hueneme, CA (2018-2020) as Executive Officer deploying to Camp Shields, Okinawa, Japan; and FIRST Naval Construction Regiment, Port Hueneme, CA (2020-2022) as Chief Staff Officer.
His facilities and staff tours include Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, San Diego, CA (2012-2014) as Facilities Engineering and Acquisition Division (FEAD) Director, Assistant Public Works Officer and Production Officer for Naval Base Point Loma Public Works Department; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD (2015-2017) as Instructor, Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering; Commander Navy Installations Command, Washington D.C. (2017-2018) as N45 Facilities Environmental Action Officer; and Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan (2022-2025) as Public Works Officer.
Commander Scharar ‘s unit awards include the Battle “E”, NAVFAC FEC “Best of Type” (2 awards), Navy Unit Commendation (2 awards) and Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards). He is qualified Seabee Combat Warfare, Surface Warfare Officer and Small Craft; registered Professional Engineer (Civil) in the state of Arizona; Acquisition Professional Member; and Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Level 1.
