Capt. Brian Cummings was commissioned through the Navy ROTC program at the Virginia Military Institute as an Ensign in May 2001, and was promoted to his current rank in July 2018.  

He began his training as a Basic Diving Officer at Naval Diving Salvage and Training Center, Panama City, FL.  After graduating in Dec. 2001, he attended 6 months of Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island and reported to his first operational tour aboard the forward deployed minesweeper, USS ARDENT (MCM 12). His follow-on operational tours included Office in Charge EODMU 5 DET 53, Santa Rita, Guam; Assistant Plans Officer, Expeditionary Strike Group 2, Little Creek, VA, Executive Officer, Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, Little Creek, VA, and Commanding Officer, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 6.
 
His shore tours included Officer in Charge EODMU 2 DET Newport, Newport, Rhode Island; Training Officer, Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Ft Walton Beach, FL; Current Operations EOD Officer, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, HI; and EOD Plans Officer, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, Virginia Beach, VA, and is currently serving as the Executive Officer of Navy Expeditionary Warfare Development Center.
 
He has a master’s degree in Defense and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute.

His personal awards include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon, as well as various service and campaign awards.
