Captain Michael R. Dillon
Commanding Officer, Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron One
Capt. Michael Dillon is a native of Erial, New Jersey. He earned his commission from the United States Naval Academy in May 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He is a single father to his son, Roman.
Throughout 11 years of Active Duty service, he completed afloat division officer tours as Damage Control Assistant, Combat Information Center Officer/Assistant Operations Officer, Training Officer and acting Operations Officer in USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49), and as Fire Control Officer, Force Protection Officer, Non-compliant VBSS Officer and acting Damage Control Assistant in USS John S. McCain (DDG 56). As a Department Head (DH), he served as Weapons Officer, Combat Systems Officer and Senior Watch Officer in USS Pinckney (DDG 91). His ashore Staff Department Head tour was as the Training & Readiness Officer (N7), Regional Protocol Officer, and Africa/UAE Liaison Officer for both Commander, Navy Region Southwest Asia and NSA Bahrain staffs.
CAPT Dillon affiliated with the Navy Reserve on 01 August 2013. His command tours have been as Commanding Officer, NR Littoral Combat Ship Seaframe ALPHA, Commanding Officer, ALPHA and BRAVO Security Boat Divisions in Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) ELEVEN, and Commanding Officer of Military Sealift Command Expeditionary Port Unit 114 (MSC EPU 114). His staff tours have been as acting Training Officer (N7), and Weapons Officer (N9) for MSRON ONE, and Chief Staff Officer and Executive Officer for NR Expeditionary Strike Group THREE.
He was selected for Command-at-Sea (CAS) and assumed command of Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron ONE in April 2024.
Selected to return to active duty from January 2018 to June 2020, he served as the Deputy Director for the C4I System of the Systems Operational Test (SOT) Program, as well as the Deputy Installation Execution Manager for Naval Information Warfare Systems Command’s Fleet Readiness Directorate, while still executing his Commanding Officer responsibilities. He was also selected to mobilize as the Deputy Director of Operations for Naval Amphibious Forces, Task Force 51 / 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade directing USN/USMC employment in support of Operations Octave Quartz, Resolute Support, Inherent Resolve, Freedom Sentinel and Spartan Shield from July 2020 to July 2021, while also still maintaining command of MSC EPU 114.
Knowing the importance of continuing education, CAPT Dillon has earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security Affairs – Middle East, Southwest Asia and Africa, from the Naval Postgraduate School in September 2009, as well as his Joint Professional Military Education - Phase I certification from the Naval War College Detachment the same year. Additionally, he is a graduate of the 2017 Reserve Component National Security Course held at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
He is authorized to wear the Surface Warfare and Small Craft (OIC) breast insignias, and his personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and various other service, unit, campaign, and deployment awards.
