Senior Chief Nugent is a native of Blacksburg, Virginia. Enlisting in the Navy in 1999, he completed Operations Specialist ‘A’ School. His initial assignment was with the USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) in Norfolk, Virginia. During this time, he completed his first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 2003, Nugent began his career as a Selected Reservist and was initially assigned to Navy Reserve Center Roanoke. His subsequent assignments include Commander, Amphibious Group 2, Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe, Tactical Air Control Squadron 22, Military Sealift Command Headquarters, Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 2, and MSRON-10. During his reserve service, Nugent completed multiple deployments, serving as a Tactical Supervisor on the Al-Bashrah Oil Terminal from 2009-2010, where he was selected for Chief Petty Officer, and as a Mission Commander aboard the USNS Walter S. Diehl (T-AO-193) from 2019- 2020, supporting 5th Fleet operations.
While assigned to MSRON-10, he served as the Operations Department Lead Chief Petty Officer (LCPO), Intelligence Department LCPO, and Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL). He also received his designation as Mission Commander.
He assumed his current duties as the NECC CSEL in September 2025.
Nugent earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from Radford University and two associate degrees, an Associate of Arts in General Studies and an Associate of Applied Science in Drafting and Design from New River Community College. He is a Graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy – RC Class 61 (Orange). He is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Expeditionary Warfare Specialist.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Good Conduct Medal (six awards), Iraqi Campaign Medal (two awards), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (one bronze star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (silver hourglass, Bronze “M”, 2 device), and various other service and personal awards.
