Capt. Daniel S. Layton
A native of Matthews, NC, CAPT Layton enlisted in the Navy in
1990. He was selected into the Broadened
Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program at NTC, San
Diego, CA. Awarded a Navy Reserve
Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship in 1991, he attended Tulane University
earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and received his commission
in May 1995.
CAPT Layton completed Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL (BUD/S)
training in 1996. From 1996 to 2000, he was assigned to SEAL Team FOUR (ST-4). He entered the Navy Selected Reserves in 2000,
then mobilized in support of Naval Special Warfare Group ONE (NSWG-1) in 2001. CAPT Layton was selected into the Navy Reserve,
Full Time Support (FTS) program in October 2003 and reported to Navy
Operational Support Center (NOSC) Eleanor, WV as Commanding Officer. He returned to NAB Coronado, CA as Executive
Officer at NSW Operational Support Team ONE (OST-1) from 2006 until 2008. He attended the Joint Advanced Warfighting
School (JAWS) in 2008, where he received a Master’s of Science degree in Joint
Campaign Strategy and Planning. While
serving as Operations Officer for Naval Special Warfare Group ELEVEN (NSWG-11) from
2009 to 2011, he deployed in support of Combined, Joint Special Operations Task
Force-Arabian Peninsula (CJSOTF-AP). CAPT
Layton then took command of SEAL Team EIGHTEEN (ST-18) from 2011 to 2013. Receiving orders to Naples, Italy, he was the
SOF Planner for Commander, Naval Forces Europe/Africa and Commander, Sixth
Fleet from 2013 to 2016. Following his
overseas tour, he was assigned to US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) in
Tampa, FL as the Operational Support Officer (OSO) and Senior Navy Reserve
Advisor to the Deputy Commander, Mobilization and Reserve Affairs (M&RA). Most recently, CAPT Layton had the honor of
leading the NSW Reserve Component as Commander, Naval Special Warfare Group
ELEVEN.
