POINT LOMA, Calif. - A U.S. Navy Sailor aided distressed mariners in San Diego Bay, March 26, 2021. Senior Chief Hull Maintenance Technician Mario Pais, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training and Evaluation Unit (EODTEU) 1, was with his unit at sea when he heard a distress call over the Coast Guard radio channel. According to a San Diego Harbor Police report, Pais responded quickly to the call and took control of the scene. He administered first aid to a civilian mariner and calmed the remainder of passengers aboard their boat before safely leading them to the San Diego Harbor Police Station in Shelter Island, San Diego. Pais’ actions improved the overall chances of the survivability of the injured civilian, according to the report.
